Questions people ask
About levels, kit, cost, crews and safety. If yours is not here, email hello@specvista.com and put Wayfellow in the subject.
- Do I need to be fit or experienced?
No. The first trips are easy lowland walks of about 6 to 12 km, at a steady pace with stops. If you can walk for two to three hours with breaks, you can do them.
When you register you choose a distance band (5 to 10 km, 10 to 18 km, or 18 km or more) and a pace, and groups are made from people who chose the same.
- Can I come on my own?
Yes. Wayfellow is built for people coming alone. You do not need a friend or partner to join, and most people in a group will not know each other on the first trip.
- What should I bring?
Waterproof jacket, warm layer, hat and gloves in winter, walking boots or shoes with grip, a small backpack, water, snacks or lunch, a charged phone and your train ticket.
Each trip plan comes with a kit list for that route and the forecast for the day.
- How much does it cost?
A trip costs GBP 8, paid when you book. Train or bus fares and food are your own. There are no free trips: free groups fill up with people who do not turn up.
- How do crews work?
After each walk you answer two questions: did you enjoy it, and would you walk with this group again? Groups that say yes get the next trip offered to them first. Walk together a few times and you are a crew.
- Is it safe to walk with people I have not met?
Trips are small, planned and checked in and out. Members will verify a phone number and photo, every trip will have start and end check-ins with a trusted contact you choose, and there will be a code of conduct with a way to report anyone. Women-only and beginner trips are planned too. The safety page has the detail.
- Where do the walks go?
Winter trips use routes reachable by train or bus from Birmingham New Street: the Lickey Hills, Clent Hills, Kinver Edge, Cannock Chase, the Malverns, Sutton Park and the Wyre Forest. Peak District and Shropshire Hills trips follow from spring 2027.
- When do trips start?
The first trips run from November 2026. Register interest and we will email you when dates are announced.
- What if the weather is bad?
The forecast is checked 72 hours and 24 hours before each trip. If it is unsafe, the trip is moved or cancelled and you get your money back.
- Who runs Wayfellow?
Wayfellow is a trading name of Specvista Technology Ltd, a UK technology company. The first ten trips are organised and led by the Wayfellow team, with a host on every walk.
- Is this a dating app?
No. Wayfellow is for walking and for friendship. There are no profiles to swipe and no feed.
